bored. designing an alternative to zodiac/ i ching etc. i still need to write the rules, but the idea is to develop a system to take day of week(y)/ month(x) data for two individuals and determine their compatibility by overlaying their respective symbols. an opportunity to develop an iphone-geared web app? i think so.

each symbol needed to (1) be comprised of the same basic elements, 3 circles and 1 bar (2) fit within the same square footprint (3) be easily distinguished from another symbol (4) needed 1 symbol for each space on a 7x12 grid.

Here's a quick (1h), serviceable poster I did for a movie screening at AU. If I was less of a hack, I might actually go through the trouble of screen printing it to achieve those overprint effects. instead, I faked it. With computers.

Even though on some level I like the way this version feels, the abundance of high-contrast grey bars was painful to look at printed at full size. I changed the color scheme for the final version to light on dark, and decreased the contrast between the bars corresponding to "out of season" and the background, allowing the positive data points to stand out. I also edited the headline to be more literal, though in retrospect i prefer the mystery of the original.

the shadow of the earth falls across the bright face of the full moon and suddenly the terrible geometry of my tiny existence is clear and the sky is no longer a ceiling lit by points of light but obviously a limitless expanse of nothingness compared to which even the earth and moon are as small as atoms and where does that leave me, a tiny instance of 'human' among billions of class:'human', utterly unimportant even when considered as a teeming whole? nowhere.
